Abstract

Takayasu arteritis is defined as a chronic, progressive, inflammatory, occlusive disease of the aorta and its branches. The significant source of morbidity is organ ischemia due to vascular complications. Although medical management is effective, surgical interventions may be needed in case of acute ischemic events. We herein presented a 19-year-old girl diagnosed with takayasu arteritis for 2 months, who was admitted to the hospital with acute abdominal pain. Angioplasty was tried to relieve the obstruction but it failed and she was referred to surgery. She underwent aorto-mesenteric by-pass surgery. In addition, she was performed intestinal resection of 30 cm during third exploration and she was discharged from the hospital on the postoperative day 18. As a result, we suggest that in case of acute ischemic events in chronic patients with Takayasu arteritis, by-pass surgery should be considered to provide long-term survival and wait for resection procedures.
