Abstract

Objective: Renal anomalies (RA) can be associated with congenital heart diseases (CHD). The most valuable test for detecting the renal anomalies is ultrasonography. However, it can not be applied practically in our region. In this study we investigated whether the RAs can be detected by the sector probe during echocardiographic study or not.

Materials and Methods: In 100 children with CHDs the pediatric cardiologist tried to evaluate the kidneys. Then all patients were evaluated by a radiologist by ultrasonography. The results were compared.

Results: The cardiologist diagnosed the 7 of 8 patients with RA. In 3 of 92 patients with normal kidneys the cardiologist defined a RA. Thus the sensitivity and specificity of the test were detected as 87.5% (7/8) and 96.7% (89/92), respectively.

Conclusion: In conclusion; in regions that ultrasonography can not be applied practically, the RAs associating to the CHDs can be detected during echocardiographic study by sector probe.
