Abstract

Objective: Renal transplantation is a procedure which requires enthusiasm, patience and effort of both transplant physicians and patients. Therefore, utmost efforts should be exert to do whatever is conductive to keep hopes alive. Even the simplest form of an upper respiratory tract infection in the postoperative period may cause serious problems. In this study, we aimed to determine the clinical characteristics and prevalence of ear, nose, and throat diseases in the renal transplant patients followed-up by the nephrology and transplantation outpatient clinic of our hospital and to investigate if there is a statistical significant difference between healthy people of similar age and gender, and transplant patients or not.

Materials and Methods: In 50 renal transplant patients followed -up by the nephrology and transplantation outpatient clinic of our hospital, ear, nose, and throat examinations were performed and prospectively recorded.

Results: Ten patients were diagnosed as orolabial herpes simplex and zoster. Acute rhinosinusitis in 4 patients and acute otitis media in 2 patients were also detected. No complications were observed due to early diagnosis and treatment of these patients.

Conclusion: Periodically pre and postoperative ear, nose, and throat examinations of renal transplant patients are important for determination and prevention of mortality and morbidity.
