Abstract

In this study, the effects of insulin treatment in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus occurred secondary sulphonylurea insufficiency were investigated. Eight weeks insulin treatment was applied 25 patients who occurred secondary sulphonylurea insufficiency. C-peptide, insulin and glucose levels of 24 hours were measured before and after insulin treatment. HbA1c levels were 14.4±2.3 % (ranges 9.7-18.2) prior to insulin treatment, 6.9±1.2 % (ranges 5.1-10.8) after treatment (p< 0.0001). Fasting C-peptide levels were 0.53±0.05 (0.46-0.61) nmol/L in patients who are using sulphonylurea, at the end of eight weeks insulin treatment c- peptide levels were 0.35±0.05 (ranges 0.28-0.43) nmol/L (p< 0.0001). Finally, it has been postulated that insulin treatment is effective method for metabolic controlling and regulating endogen insulin secretion in patients with noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus occurred secondary sulphonylurea insufficiency.
