Abstract

We aimed to investigate the function of left atrial and P-wave dispersion and correlation between these parameters in patients with severe mitral stenosis with sinus rhythm. Twenty-two patients who had pure severe mitral stenosis with sinus rhythm (Group I) and 21 healthy controls (Group II) were included in this study. P wave dispersion was measured from 12-lead electrocardiogram. M-mode and 2D echocardiographic measurements, left atrial (LA) dimensions, volumes, fractional change of LA area and LA ejection fraction were recorded. There were no significant differences between group I and group II in terms of age (38±8 years vs 33±6 years p>0.05) and heart rate (92±17 beats/min vs 81±13 beats/min p>0.05). Although LA diameter, LAVmax, LAVmin and P dispersion were significantly greater in group I than in group II, LAFAC and LAEF were significantly lower in group I than in group II. LATEV was not significantly different in both groups. Good correlation was found between P dispersion and LA diameter (r: +0.75, p<0.001), LAEF (r: -0.40, p<0.01) and LAFAC (r: -0.70, p<0.01). Increased LA diameter and decreased LAFAC, LAEF correlated with increased P wave dispersion in patients with severe mitral stenosis with sinus rhythm.
