Abstract

Especially, crowded places as dormitories were suitable environment for the fungal infections. Superficial fungal infections are usually caused by dermatophytes, sometimes yeasts and nondermatophyte molds. This study was planned to determine the fungal foot skin and nail flora of medical students. In the study, inter-digital foot skin-nail scraping samples from 138 volunteer students who have been no clinical symptoms were studied. Percent 37.0 of examined specimens was found as positive for fungal agents. The rate of positive culture was obtained high ratio in male students (62.3 %) compared to female students (37.7 %). Aspergillus spp.strains were the most isolated (%6.5) fungus; followed by Penicillium spp. (5.8 %), Candida spp. (5.8 %), Scopuloriopsis spp.(5.1 %), Clodosporium spp. (5.1%), T.rubrum (5.1%), Fusarium spp.(3.0 %) and T. mentogrophytes (0.7%). Nondermatophyte molds and yeasts isolated from cultures may be real or contaminant agent. For that reason, results of cultures must be evaluated together clinical findings.
